Éclairage d'un terrain de pickleball : guide LED, normes FFP et budget 2026

Lighting a pickleball court: LED guide, FFP standards and 2026 budget

Playing pickleball in the evening, organizing slots after work or hosting an FFP-certified tournament: all of this requires asuitable lighting, homogeneous and without glare. Poorly sized, a light post transforms a beautiful field into a shadowy area where the ball disappears into the net. This guide explains thelux levels, the choice ofLED spotlights, the sizing for 1 to 4 lots and theindicative budgets 2026for clubs, town halls, hotels and private complexes.

Why Lighting Matters on a Pickleball Court

Playing comfort, safety and evening operation

The pickleball ball is light and brightly colored: without sufficient and uniform light, players lose their trajectory, especially on volleys and rallies near the kitchen. Good lighting extends the usable slots (club, campsite, hotel) and makes movement around the court safer. This is often the first lever of profitability after installing the covering: you sell hours of play that natural light did not allow.

Competition, FFP and site image

For a pitch targeted for competition or FFP approval, lighting is not optional: it must reach measurable levels, with an acceptable uniformity ratio and glare control for players and referees. A poorly lit complex gives an amateurish image in photos and limits broadcasts or partner events. For the overall framework (dimensions, covering, standards), rely on our guideFFP standards for a pickleball courtand on the pagecompetition pickleball court.

What lighting levels (lux) to plan for

Leisure and club (200 lux)

For leisure use, school or local club that wants sessions at the end of the day, we generally aim200 lux on averageon the playing area (official area 6.10 x 13.41 m, or club area 9 x 18 m according to your specifications). This is the level most requested on our 2025-2026 sites: correct comfort, controlled budget, simple LED maintenance.

Intensive training and ambitious club (300 lux)

When the site hosts training courses, leagues or filmed matches, we go up to300 luxon at least one “reference” plot. Uniformity becomes critical: the gap between the center of the court and the baselines must not hinder the reading of the trajectories. On a multi-court project, it is common to mix 200 lux on the leisure courts and 300 lux on the main court.

Tournament and reinforced approval (500 lux and more)

International references (USA Pickleball, large US complexes) often aim for the equivalent of50 foot candles, or approximately500 luxfor the televised competition or the final tables. In France, an FFP “tournament” field comes close to this logic: more powerful floodlights, more masts, photometric study and sometimes dimming. Plan for this level from the outline phase if you are targeting labeled events, not after the fact.

LED technology: masts, uniformity and glare

LED sports spotlights and mast height

Today we use almost exclusivelyHigh efficiency LED(lifespan 50,000 h+, reduced consumption vs halogen). For the outdoors, masts6 to 8 mgenerally carry 2 to 4 projectors per head, positioned at the corners of the right-of-way to cross the beams and limit the shadows cast by the net. Indoors (gymnasium, hall), the existing lighting may be sufficient after audit lux; otherwise we complete with LED ramps or targeted reinforcement above the playing area.

Uniformity, angle and glare

The average lux is not enough: you need auniformity ratioacceptable (often ≥ 0.5 according to sports specifications) and optics which avoid direct glare in the eyes of players. L'orientation of the landalso plays a role: a north-south axis limits the low sun at the end of the day which competes with your spotlights. Therefenceand a windbreak can carry light covers or glare shields: to be integrated into the mass plan, not retained.

Control, dimming and operating cost

Boxes with astronomical clock, presence detection or 50-100% dimming reduce the energy bill on municipal or hotel sites. On a campsite or a club, the time slot remote control avoids having to turn on 4 courts at 11 p.m. for a single game. Count0.8 to 1.5 kWinstalled per site in 200 lux depending on the height of the masts and the efficiency of the luminaires.

Size the lighting for 1 to 4 courts

The quantities depend on the actual footprint around the playing area. For a club field, we generally dimension on9 x 18 m(recoils included). The official dimensions and minimum surface areas are detailed in our guidesdimensions of a pickleball courtAndminimum surface area required.

Number of masts and typical configuration

ProjectTarget levelMasts (indicative)Installation budget included excluding tax (2026)
1 outdoor area200 lux4 masts€7,800 to €9,500
1 outdoor area300 lux4 to 6 masts€9,500 to €12,000
2 plots side by side200 lux6 to 8 masts€14,500 to €17,500
4 courts (e.g. tennis court)200 lux8 to 12 masts€22,000 to €28,000
1 “tournament” court500 lux6 reinforced masts+4,000 to 6,000 € vs 300 lux

These ranges include supply, light civil engineering of the masts, cabling, commissioning and adjustment. They vary depending on distance from the electrical panel, removal of old candelabra and network constraints. The conversion4 courts on 1 tennis courtoften imposes a distribution of masts on the large rectangle: a photometric study avoids dead zones between courts.

Indoor: reuse or reinforce the existing

In the room, start with alight meter readingon the playing area empty then with occupation (parquet or PVC reflections). If the gym already exceeds 300 uniform lux, there is no need to over-equip. Otherwise, complete with sports LED ramps or localized reinforcement. THEindoor PVC rolland the ceiling height are to be crossed with the lighting from the phaseconstruction of the land.

Integrate lighting into your overall project

Connection, electrical standards and town planning

Anticipate a dedicated line, a compliant earth connection and a cable routing outside the player passage. In communities, sports lighting is often included in the filebuilding permit or prior declarationwith mast section plan. For sites close to habitat, cross-reference lighting with our guidesoundproofing a pickleball court: light does not reduce noise, but a global project reassures elected officials and the neighborhood.

Construction site schedule and coating coordination

We generally install the masts and sheathsafter the slab and before or after the coveringdepending on the method of foundation (concrete masses on the outskirts). On acrylic resin, protect the surface the day the nacelles are lifted. Find the choice of surface in thecomparison of pickleball court coveringsand the overall orders of magnitude on the pageprice of a pickleball court.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Undersize the luxto save money: player frustration, complaints, costly recovery.
  • Projectors too low or poorly oriented: glare and shadows from the net in the center.
  • Forget uniformityon multi-courts: a “black” court next to a decent court.
  • Neglecting maintenance: dusting of optics, replacement of faulty LED modules.
  • Dissociating lighting and network: length of trench up to the TGBT forgotten in the costing.

Frequently asked questions about lighting a pickleball court

How many lux for a club pickleball court?

Allow 200 lux on average for leisure and evening slots, 300 lux for a structured club or training courses, and around 500 lux for tournament level or enhanced approval.

What is the budget for lighting an outdoor area with LED?

In 2026, plan on around €7,800 to €9,500 excluding tax for a 200 lux plot of land (4 masts, installation included), €14,500 to €17,500 excluding tax for two plots of land, and €22,000 to €28,000 excluding tax for four plots of land on a large area.

How many poles for a pickleball court?

For an outdoor area isolated at 200 lux, we generally install 4 masts of 6 to 8 m at the corners of the right-of-way. Two courts often require 6 to 8 masts with beam distribution to avoid gray areas between courts.

Is lighting mandatory for FFP approval?

As soon as you are aiming for evening competitions or approval with night time slots, yes: the lux level, uniformity and absence of glare will be controlled or required in the technical file.

Can lighting be added after the covering has been installed?

Yes, provided that you provide the massifs and sheaths on the periphery without breaking the slab. However, it is better to integrate it into the initial ground plan to optimize the cabling and positioning of the masts.
