How to repair cracks on a tennis court

Cracks on a tennis court are not all equal. Some can be sealed in half a day. Others show that the slab is moving and that an acrylic paint will not survive winter. This guide is first about how to repair cracks on a tennis court: diagnosis, methods, limits. Pickleball only appears at the end, if a change of use is more reasonable than another patch.

Four points to keep:

• Surface hairline, live crack and structural crack do not take the same product.
• An overly powerful pressure washer and DIY household sealant often speed up peel.

How to diagnose the type of tennis-court crack

Take photos along a string line, after rain and when dry. Measure the opening (paper, feeler, ruler). Note whether the lip is sharp (new) or rounded (old, eroded).

Surface hairline (often < 1 mm)

Spider-web network in the acrylic coat, no step. Common cause: UV, too-fast drying at install, tired old resin. The concrete or asphalt below is not moving. Treatment: clean, primer, acrylic levelling, sometimes a local finish coat. This is the most common case on courts older than 8-10 years.

Live crack (often 1 to 5 mm, working)

The opening changes with temperature and moisture. You see it wider in summer or after frost. A rigid filler breaks. You need a flexible product (sports PU sealant or the tennis manufacturer system), sometimes a bridging tape, then acrylic coats. If you cover a live crack with paint only, it returns in a few months.

Structural crack (open gap, step, puddle)

The slab or asphalt has settled: roots, missing foundation, poor compaction, drain. Filling the surface is cosmetic. You need a view on the substrate (sometimes a control office or an experienced applicator). While the ground moves, no tennis or pickleball resin “cures” the court. How to repair a tennis-court hairline

1. Clean: blow, wash at low pressure, let dry. No harsh household detergent, no solvents.
2. Open slightly if the lip is chalking, so the leveller can key in.
3. Apply acrylic leveller from the system (Greenset, Laykold, Plexipave or equivalent) in thin coats.
4. Light sand after drying, then tinted finish and local reline if the line is hit.

Slab temperature often ≥ 10 °C, no rain in the hours that follow. A club can do a few linear metres in-house. Beyond that, or if chalking is general, a professional avoids a patchwork of shades. On a whole chalking court, a weekend “lick of paint” does not catch a tired acrylic finish: you spend time for a colour gap visible on the first sunny Sunday.

Treat a live crack without covering it blind

Typical tennis method:

• open to a V, dust off;
• backer rod and flexible sports polyurethane sealant;
• bridging tape if the manufacturer system requires it;
• levelling coats then acrylic finish;
• watch one summer/winter cycle before concluding it is “done”.

If the crack follows an expansion joint, do not lock it with rigid acrylic: the joint must keep moving. That is a frequent error from grounds teams who “fill everything” with mortar.

When repair is no longer enough

Warning signs:

• the same linear metre reopens every spring;
• a step of several millimetres (fall risk, unpredictable bounce);
• water sitting in the crack more than 24 hours;

Frequent mistakes to avoid

• High-pressure washer too close: strips resin and widens the crack.
• Bathroom silicone: no adhesion, yellows, not a sports product.
• Cold DIY asphalt on the playing surface: wrong grain and bounce.
• Road marking paint: dangerous friction, not a sports acrylic system.
• Ignoring slope: a crack in a dish will fill with water and freeze.

When to consider pickleball renovation rather than new tennis

This is not the answer to every crack. It is an option for a club or municipality whose tennis no longer fills the court, while the slab, fence and often lights still stand. In that case, repainting identical tennis freezes a declining use. Converting changes the sports programme on an asset already paid for.
